China's Military Drills Encircle Taiwan in Unprecedented Show of Force

On April 1, 2025, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China initiated large-scale, unannounced military exercises surrounding Taiwan, involving coordinated operations by the army, navy, air force, and rocket force. The PLA's Eastern Theater Command described these drills as a "stern warning" to "Taiwan independence" forces.

The exercises encompassed air interception, maritime assault, ground strikes, and joint blockade operations. Notably, the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong approached within 24 nautical miles of Taiwan's coast, marking its closest proximity to date. Additionally, 71 Chinese aircraft and 13 warships were active in the region during the drills. The Chinese Coast Guard also conducted law enforcement patrols, including the inspection and interception of vessels.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense condemned the maneuvers, stating that China's actions destabilize regional security. The Presidential Office labeled China a "troublemaker," accusing it of escalating regional tensions and challenging the international order.

These military exercises were reportedly in response to recent remarks by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, who labeled China as a "foreign hostile force" and announced initiatives to counter Chinese influence in Taiwan. These initiatives include the re-establishment of military courts and increased scrutiny of Chinese visitors and residents.

The United States, through the American Institute in Taiwan, criticized China's actions, stating there is no justification for China's "irresponsible threats" and military pressure operations. The U.S. reaffirmed its support for Taiwan's security.

This is not the first instance of China conducting military exercises near Taiwan. However, the scale and proximity of the current drills, especially the approach of the Shandong aircraft carrier within 24 nautical miles of Taiwan's coast, are unprecedented. These actions reflect escalating tensions and a more assertive posture by China in the region.

The recent military exercises by China around Taiwan mark a significant escalation in cross-strait tensions. The unprecedented scale and proximity of these drills underscore the fragile nature of regional security and the complex interplay of political, economic, and military factors influencing Taiwan-China relations.
