Samsung Unveils Ultra-Compact All-Solid-State Battery for Wearables
Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. (SEMCO) has announced the development of an ultra-compact, all-solid-state battery designed specifically for wearable devices. This innovative battery boasts an industry-leading energy density of 200 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L), matching that of traditional lithium-ion batteries while occupying a smaller volume. The company plans to commence mass production in 2026, with initial applications anticipated in products such as the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch, and Galaxy Buds.
All-solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolytes found in conventional lithium-ion batteries with solid electrolytes. This design enhances safety by reducing the risk of leaks and fires, as solid electrolytes are non-flammable. Additionally, the solid structure allows for more flexible and compact designs, making them particularly suitable for small electronic devices.
SEMCO has leveraged its expertise in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) to overcome challenges associated with all-solid-state batteries. By employing a manufacturing process similar to that used for MLCCs—printing thin layers of electrode and solid electrolyte materials, stacking them alternately, and cutting them—the company has developed a battery that prevents wrinkling and minimizes volume change during charging. This approach eliminates the need for additional space to accommodate internal volume expansion, a common limitation in traditional lithium-ion batteries, thereby enabling ultra-compact designs.
In preparation for commercialization, SEMCO has secured over 40 patents related to oxide-based all-solid-state batteries in the past three years. These patents encompass compositions of solid-state electrolytes and original battery structure designs. The company is currently conducting prototype evaluations with corporate customers and plans to begin mass production at its Busan plant in the first half of 2026.
The introduction of SEMCO's all-solid-state batteries is poised to significantly impact the wearable device market. The enhanced safety, higher energy density, and compact design of these batteries could lead to longer battery life and more versatile form factors for devices such as smartwatches, fitness trackers, and wireless earbuds.
