Aerospace Corporation and Google Enhance Space Weather Forecasting with AI

Published:

On January 28, 2025, The Aerospace Corporation, a nonprofit operating a federally funded research and development center dedicated to the space enterprise, announced a collaboration with Google Public Sector to enhance space weather forecasting. This partnership aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing to predict geomagnetic storms days in advance with unprecedented accuracy and speed.

Space weather events, such as solar flares and geomagnetic storms, can disrupt critical infrastructure, including telecommunications and power grids. The collaboration seeks to address the challenges posed by the vast and complex data involved in forecasting these events. For instance, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captures approximately 70,000 images daily, each containing valuable information about solar activity. By combining Aerospace's expertise in space science with Google's advanced technologies like Vertex AI and high-performance computing, the initiative aims to provide more accurate and timely space weather predictions.

Kevin Bell, Senior Vice President of Aerospace's Engineering and Technology Group, emphasized the significance of this collaboration:

"This collaboration is a game-changer for space weather forecasting and a powerful example of how innovation and partnership can drive national security and societal impact."

Jim Kelly, Vice President of Federal Sales at Google Public Sector, highlighted the broader implications:

"This collaboration demonstrates the transformative potential of AI to benefit society as a whole."

Enhanced space weather forecasting can lead to improved infrastructure resilience, economic stability, and national security. By predicting geomagnetic storms with greater accuracy, utilities and service providers can implement protective measures, reducing the risk of disruptions. Minimizing the impact of space weather events on critical infrastructure can prevent economic losses associated with service outages. Protecting space assets and ensuring the reliability of communication and navigation systems are vital for defense operations.

Historically, significant geomagnetic storms have had profound impacts. The Carrington Event of 1859 caused widespread telegraph system failures and auroras visible near the equator. The March 1989 geomagnetic storm led to a nine-hour power outage in Quebec, affecting millions and highlighting the vulnerability of power grids to space weather. The 2003 Halloween Storms caused satellite anomalies, power outages in Sweden, and disruptions to aviation communications.

The collaboration between The Aerospace Corporation and Google Public Sector represents a significant advancement in space weather forecasting. By harnessing AI and high-performance computing, this partnership aims to provide timely and accurate predictions, mitigating the adverse effects of geomagnetic storms on society's critical infrastructure.
