Aerospace Corporation and Google Collaborate to Enhance Space Weather Forecasting
On January 28, 2025, The Aerospace Corporation and Google Public Sector announced a collaboration aimed at revolutionizing space weather forecasting. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing, the partnership seeks to predict geomagnetic storms with unprecedented accuracy and lead time, thereby safeguarding critical infrastructure from potential disruptions.
Space weather events, such as solar flares and geomagnetic storms, pose significant risks to modern infrastructure, including telecommunications, power grids, and satellite operations. Accurately forecasting these events has been challenging due to the vast and complex data involved. For instance, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captures approximately 70,000 images daily, each containing valuable information about solar activity. Analyzing this extensive dataset to identify patterns has been a major obstacle in developing reliable long-term forecasting models.
To address this challenge, The Aerospace Corporation is collaborating with Google Public Sector to leverage cutting-edge AI and machine learning tools. By combining Aerospace's deep expertise in space science with Google Cloud's advanced technologies like Vertex AI and high-performance computing, the initiative aims to develop more accurate and timely space weather predictions.
Kevin Bell, Senior Vice President of Aerospace's Engineering and Technology Group, emphasized the significance of this collaboration:

The importance of accurate space weather forecasting is underscored by historical events. In March 1989, a geomagnetic storm caused the collapse of the Hydro-Québec power grid, leaving six million people without electricity for nine hours. More recently, in October 2024, PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. power grid operator, issued a geomagnetic disturbance warning, highlighting the ongoing risks posed by such events.
By enhancing the prediction of geomagnetic storms, the collaboration between The Aerospace Corporation and Google Public Sector aims to bolster the resilience of satellite communications, ensure accurate GPS navigation, and strengthen power grid reliability. This initiative represents a significant step forward in protecting critical infrastructure from the adverse effects of space weather events.
