Denver City Council Approves $70 Million Women's Soccer Stadium Plan

Published:

On May 12, 2025, the Denver City Council approved a $70 million plan to acquire and prepare a 40-acre site at the former Gates Rubber Factory location for a women's professional soccer stadium. This initiative positions Denver among a select group of global cities with stadiums dedicated exclusively to women's sports.

The project, championed by Mayor Mike Johnston and other supporters, is hailed as a transformative economic opportunity that could generate billions in economic activity. However, critics express concerns over the city's tight budget and the historical underperformance of similar stadium ventures. Despite these reservations, the City Council's approval allows design work and community outreach to commence, with further public processes required before committing city funds.

In January 2025, Denver was awarded the 16th National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) franchise, with plans for a 14,500-seat, soccer-specific stadium and an entertainment district at Santa Fe Yards, approximately five miles south of downtown. The ownership group, led by IMA Financial Group CEO Rob Cohen, secured the franchise with a record $110 million expansion fee, marking the largest expansion fee in U.S. women's sports history.

A preliminary city study projects a $2.2 billion economic impact over 30 years and the creation of 1,100 jobs. The city plans to spend $50 million to purchase the land and $20 million on infrastructure upgrades, with most funding coming from Denver's capital budget.

Mayor Mike Johnston stated, "This project at Santa Fe Yards will transform an underutilized eyesore into a recreational and economic hub where memories are made, culture is built, and championships are won." Rob Cohen emphasized the project's significance, saying, "This will be the largest overall investment in a women's professional sports team in history." Olympic gold medalist and alpine skiing legend Mikaela Shiffrin joined the ownership group in May 2025, expressing her enthusiasm for supporting women's sports in her home state of Colorado.

Supporters believe the stadium and surrounding entertainment district will revitalize the area, create jobs, and boost local businesses. Critics caution that similar stadium projects have historically underdelivered on economic promises and could place financial burdens on taxpayers.

The approval of the $70 million plan marks a significant step toward establishing Denver as a leader in women's professional sports. As the project progresses, ongoing public engagement and careful financial planning will be crucial to address both the opportunities and challenges it presents.
