Mexican Navy Training Vessel Collides with Brooklyn Bridge, Fatalities Reported

Published:

On the evening of May 17, 2025, the Mexican Navy's training vessel, ARM Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and injuries to at least 19 others. The incident occurred as the ship was departing from Pier 17 in Manhattan during a global goodwill tour.

The Cuauhtémoc, a 270-foot-long barque with masts reaching up to 147 feet, was attempting to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge when its masts struck the underside of the structure, causing them to snap. Eyewitnesses reported that the ship appeared to drift backward into the bridge, suggesting a possible mechanical failure or loss of power. Videos circulating on social media showed sailors clinging to the rigging as the masts collapsed.

Emergency responders, including the FDNY and NYPD Harbor Unit, arrived promptly to assist the injured, who were transported to local hospitals. Despite the severity of the incident, the 142-year-old Brooklyn Bridge sustained no major structural damage and was reopened to traffic after a brief closure.

The ARM Cuauhtémoc, commissioned in 1982, serves as a training vessel for the Mexican Navy and has visited more than 217 ports in 63 countries over its 40-year service. The ship was on a global goodwill tour, having departed from Acapulco in April and scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 countries.

The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by both U.S. and Mexican authorities. Initial reports suggest that mechanical issues may have led to a loss of power, causing the ship to drift into the bridge. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the deaths and expressed condolences in a statement on Sunday.

This incident highlights the challenges of navigating large vessels through urban waterways and underscores the importance of stringent safety protocols. The collaboration between U.S. and Mexican authorities in the investigation emphasizes the necessity of international cooperation in maritime safety.
