New Museo Casa Kahlo to Open in Mexico City, Celebrating Frida Kahlo's Early Life and Family History
A new museum dedicated to the early life and family history of renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is set to open in Mexico City on September 27, 2025. The Museo Casa Kahlo, located in the historic Coyoacán district, will offer visitors an intimate glimpse into Kahlo's formative years through personal artifacts and previously unseen artworks.
Housed in Casa Roja, a family residence adjacent to the famed Casa Azul, the museum aims to complement the existing narrative of Kahlo's life. While Casa Azul focuses on her adult life and artistic achievements, Museo Casa Kahlo will delve into her childhood and the familial influences that shaped her. The property, originally acquired by Kahlo's parents, was later owned by her sister, Cristina Kahlo, and has remained in the family for decades. Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida's grand-niece, donated the residence for the establishment of the museum.
The museum's exhibits will include personal items such as letters, childhood photographs, dolls, jewelry, clothing, and Kahlo's first oil painting. Notably, it will also showcase a recently discovered mural believed to be the only one Kahlo ever created. These artifacts aim to provide a deeper understanding of the artist's early life and the influences that shaped her unique artistic voice.
The project is overseen by Fundación Kahlo, a nonprofit organization established by the Kahlo family to preserve Frida's legacy and promote Mexican, Indigenous, and Latin American art and culture. The museum's director is Adán García Fajardo, currently the Academic Director at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City. The design is being handled by the New York-based Rockwell Group, with support from Pentagram and Ileen Gallagher.
Mara Romeo Kahlo expressed the family's long-held dream, stating, "Frida’s legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here—on this land, in these homes, and in the culture that shaped her. Museo Casa Kahlo will allow us to tell new stories, share family secrets, host new voices, and build a future that honors her spirit."
Frida Hentschel Romeo, Kahlo's great-grand-niece, emphasized the museum's focus: "This museum isn’t just about her work—it’s about her world. It’s about how the people closest to her shaped who she became. And it’s also about the living family—those of us who carry her legacy forward."
The establishment of Museo Casa Kahlo offers a new perspective on Kahlo's life, focusing on her family influences and early artistic development, complementing the narrative presented at Casa Azul. By showcasing personal artifacts and previously unseen works, the museum provides a more intimate understanding of Kahlo's journey as an artist. Additionally, the museum plans to host rotating exhibitions of contemporary work, with a focus on Mexican, Latin American, and women+ artists, amplifying voices that reflect and expand on Kahlo’s own fearless vision.
The opening of Museo Casa Kahlo represents a significant addition to Mexico City's cultural landscape, offering visitors a deeper insight into the life and legacy of Frida Kahlo. By focusing on her formative years and family relationships, the museum provides a comprehensive narrative that honors Kahlo's enduring impact on art and culture.
