Historic Flash Flooding Hits Milwaukee, Forcing Event Cancellations and Emergency Measures
Over the weekend of August 9-10, 2025, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, experienced historic flash flooding due to record-breaking rainfall, leading to widespread disruptions, event cancellations, and emergency declarations.
The deluge resulted in the Milwaukee River cresting at a record 11.19 feet, surpassing the previous high of 10.48 feet set in July 2010. This unprecedented rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, resulting in submerged streets, flooded basements, and impassable roads.
The severe weather forced the early closure of the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, just outside Milwaukee, canceling the final day of the 11-day event. Additionally, the USA Triathlon National Championships were canceled, and the Milwaukee Brewers' game proceeded with limited parking due to flooded lots.
Emergency services responded to over 600 calls, including water rescues, gas leaks, and electrical hazards. Nearly 18,000 customers in southeast Wisconsin experienced power outages. Milwaukee County declared a state of emergency, and the Red Cross opened shelters for displaced residents.
The National Weather Service issued flood watches and warnings across multiple states, including Wisconsin, with forecasts predicting continued severe weather. Residents are advised to stay informed and exercise caution in affected areas.
