Indy Ignite's Remarkable Debut Season in Professional Women's Volleyball

In their inaugural season, the Indy Ignite have not only introduced professional women's volleyball to Indiana but have also set a high bar for success, culminating in a championship appearance in the Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF).

The Indy Ignite's first season in the PVF has been a narrative of rapid ascent and community engagement. From a victorious home opener to a strong playoff run, the team has galvanized local support and underscored Indianapolis' ambition to become a hub for women's professional sports.

The Indy Ignite was established to bring professional women's volleyball to Central Indiana. Mary Kay Huse serves as the President and General Manager, overseeing the team's operations and strategic direction. Head Coach George Padjen leads the coaching staff, emphasizing player development and competitive performance. The team's home games are hosted at the newly constructed Fishers Event Center, a 7,500-seat venue designed to enhance the fan experience.

The Ignite's inaugural match took place on January 11, 2025, at the Fishers Event Center, where they secured a 3-1 victory over the Orlando Valkyries. This match marked the beginning of a 28-match regular season, featuring 14 home games and 14 away games across eight cities. The team concluded the regular season with a 13-15 record, earning the fourth seed in the PVF playoffs.

In the semifinals, the Ignite faced the top-seeded Omaha Supernovas. Demonstrating resilience and skill, Indy emerged victorious, advancing to the championship match. The final, dubbed the "Match for a Million" due to the $1 million bonus awarded to the winning team, saw the Ignite competing against the Orlando Valkyries. Despite a valiant effort, the Ignite fell in four sets, with scores of 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-15. Opposite hitter Azhani Tealer led the team with 16 kills in the final match.

Several players made significant contributions during the season:

• Azhani Tealer: An All-First Team opposite hitter and All-Star, Tealer was instrumental in the team's offensive strategy.

• Sydney Hilley: Serving as the team's setter, Hilley earned PVF Setter of the Year honors and was named to the All-First Team. She set league records for assists (1,277) and assists per set (11.30) during the regular season.

• Caitie Baird: An outside hitter, Baird delivered standout performances, including a 28-kill match against the Vegas Thrill.

The Ignite's debut season garnered substantial community support. Their home opener was played before a sold-out crowd, reflecting the local enthusiasm for professional women's volleyball. The team's presence aligns with Indianapolis' broader ambition to become the women's sports capital of the world by 2050.

In August 2025, the Pro Volleyball Federation announced a restructuring and rebranding to become Major League Volleyball (MLV). This evolution signifies the league's commitment to expanding and enhancing the professional volleyball landscape in the United States.
