NBA Bans Jontay Porter for Life Over Gambling Policy Violations

During the 2023-2024 season, he appeared in 26 games for the Raptors.

The NBA's investigation focused on a game between the Raptors and the Sacramento Kings on March 20, 2024. Prior to this game, Porter disclosed his health status to an individual known to be a sports bettor. Subsequently, another bettor placed an $80,000 parlay bet that Porter would underperform, which could have resulted in a $1.1 million payout. Porter played less than three minutes in that game before exiting due to illness, leading to the bet being frozen and not paid out.

Additionally, between January and March 2024, Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using an associate's online betting account. These bets totaled $54,094, resulting in net winnings of $21,965. While none of these bets involved games in which Porter played, three included the Raptors in multi-game parlay bets, including one where Porter bet on the Raptors to lose. None of these specific wagers were successful.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the severity of Porter's actions, stating, "There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment."
