Toronto Blue Jays Sign Pitcher Dylan Cease to Historic $210 Million Deal
The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move to bolster their pitching staff by signing right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract. This deal, finalized on December 2, 2025, stands as the largest free-agent signing in the franchise's history.
Cease, who will turn 30 on December 28, 2025, spent the previous two seasons with the San Diego Padres. In 2024, he achieved a 14-11 record with a 3.47 ERA and pitched a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals on July 25. His performance that year earned him a fourth-place finish in the National League Cy Young Award voting. The following season, Cease recorded an 8-12 record with a 4.55 ERA, striking out 215 batters over 168 innings. His 29.8% strikeout rate ranked third among qualified pitchers in 2025.
Before joining the Padres, Cease played five seasons with the Chicago White Sox. His standout year came in 2022 when he posted a 14-8 record with a 2.20 ERA, leading the major leagues in walks and finishing second in the American League Cy Young Award voting.
The structure of Cease's contract with the Blue Jays includes a $23 million signing bonus, payable on January 15, 2026. His annual salaries are set to escalate from $22 million in 2026 to $25 million in 2032. Additionally, $64 million of the total contract value is deferred, with payments scheduled annually from 2033 through 2046. The agreement also features a limited no-trade clause, allowing Cease to block trades to eight teams without his consent.
Toronto's decision to invest heavily in Cease reflects their commitment to building upon their recent success. In 2025, the Blue Jays clinched the American League East division title for the first time since 2015 and advanced to the World Series, narrowly losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a seven-game series. Cease is expected to join a rotation that includes Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and José Berríos, positioning the team as a formidable contender in the upcoming seasons.
This strategic acquisition underscores the Blue Jays' determination to strengthen their roster as they pursue their first World Series title since 1993.
