Thailand Hosts 33rd Southeast Asian Games Amid Challenges

The 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games are set to commence today, December 9, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand. The opening ceremony will take place at Rajamangala National Stadium, beginning at 7:00 PM local time, with King Vajiralongkorn presiding over the event. This marks Thailand's return as host after 18 years, underscoring its commitment to regional unity and athletic excellence.

The SEA Games, running from December 9 to 20, will feature 574 events across 50 sports, including the debut of cricket in T10 and T20 formats. All 11 member nations of the Southeast Asian Games Federation are participating, with Timor-Leste making its first appearance as a full ASEAN member state. The Games aim to promote sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and environmental sustainability under the "Green SEA Games" initiative.

The opening ceremony, themed "We Are One," will showcase five performance segments using large-scale visuals and technology to highlight the Games' origins, cultural diversity, and athletic spirit. A major highlight will be a special performance by Thai-born K-pop star BamBam Kunpimook, alongside other globally recognized Thai artists and athletes. The ceremony will culminate in the lighting of the SEA Games cauldron in a new format intended to be a defining moment of the event.

In response to high demand, the organizing committee added 10,000 additional seats for the opening ceremony at Rajamangala National Stadium. Free registration for these seats opened on December 3, 2025, via the official SEA Games website. An additional 1,000 walk-in seats were also made available at the registration point near Football Field 1, with priority given to senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The Games will be held across Bangkok and Chonburi. Originally, Songkhla was slated to co-host certain events; however, due to severe flooding caused by Cyclone Senyar, all events planned for Songkhla have been relocated to Bangkok and Chonburi. This move underscores the challenges posed by natural disasters in organizing large-scale events and highlights the resilience and adaptability of the organizing committee.
