Wembanyama’s 41-24 Lifts Spurs Past Thunder in Double-Overtime Game 1

·

Victor Wembanyama opened his first Western Conference Finals game with a performance of rare scale, posting 41 points and 24 rebounds to carry the San Antonio Spurs past the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-115 in double overtime Monday night at Paycom Center. The road win in Game 1 gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead over the defending NBA champions.

Wembanyama added three assists while shooting 14 for 25 from the field, 1 for 2 from 3-point range and 12 for 13 from the free-throw line in 48 minutes. Coverage citing Stathead reported that his 41-point, 24-rebound line was the seventh 40-point, 20-rebound game in NBA history in the conference finals or later. NBA.com’s live blog said he also joined Hall of Famer David Robinson as the only Spurs players to record a 40-point, 20-rebound game in the postseason.

San Antonio had other major contributions in a game that repeatedly stretched beyond regulation. Rookie guard Dylan Harper finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals, with The Associated Press reporting that his seven steals set a Spurs playoff record. Oklahoma City got 31 points off the bench from Alex Caruso, a playoff career high, according to AP. Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 24 points and 12 assists, but shot 7 for 23 from the field. The Spurs also controlled the glass, outrebounding Oklahoma City 70-50.

The game itself was historic before it ended. According to AP, it was just the sixth Game 1 in NBA playoff history to go to double overtime. The loss also snapped Oklahoma City’s nine-game playoff winning streak, another sign of how difficult it was to pry away an opening game on the road in this matchup.

Wembanyama’s outing fit a postseason already marked by huge statistical performances, but this one came on a bigger stage and against the reigning champions in a series opener. He was at the center of nearly every decisive San Antonio possession late, whether finishing inside, drawing fouls or cleaning up missed shots to extend possessions.

“It was like sheer willpower. Everything was going really fast tonight — I wasn’t really thinking,” Wembanyama said, according to NBA.com’s live blog.

That was enough for the Spurs to leave Oklahoma City with home-court advantage and one of the biggest opening statements of the 2026 playoffs.
