McLaren extends Lando Norris' contract through 2030

McLaren has signed reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris to a new contract that will keep him with the team until at least the end of 2030, locking in one of the sport’s biggest names as it tries to extend its recent run of success.

The deal, announced Saturday by Formula1.com and attributed to McLaren, matters beyond a routine renewal. Norris, 26, is the driver at the center of McLaren’s resurgence, which has delivered constructors’ championships in 2024 and 2025 and the 2025 FIA Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship — the team’s first drivers’ title in 17 years, according to team officials.

Formula1.com reported that Norris’ new agreement runs through at least the end of 2030 and includes a multi-year option beyond that date. “McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030,” Norris said, according to Formula1.com.

The extension continues a partnership that began long before Norris became a champion. Formula1.com reported that he joined McLaren in 2017 as a test and development driver before moving into a race seat in 2019. Since then, he has built a McLaren record of 13 Grand Prix wins, 18 pole positions and 48 podium finishes. The same report said Norris has now started 163 Grands Prix for McLaren, more than any other driver in the team’s history.

The move also gives McLaren valuable stability in its driver lineup. Norris’ teammate, Oscar Piastri, is under contract through the end of 2028, meaning the team has both seats secured for the medium term after back-to-back constructors’ titles. Formula1.com noted that Norris’ new expiry date also matches the length of Max Verstappen’s current Red Bull contract, which runs through 2030.

For McLaren, the timing underlines an effort to preserve continuity after finally returning to the front of Formula 1. Rather than a new alliance, the contract is an extension of a relationship that has lasted nearly a decade and has now produced both team and individual championships.

Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, said the agreement strengthens that longer-term plan. “This extension gives us important continuity and reinforces our confidence in the direction we are taking together,” he said, according to Formula1.com.
