500 Million XRP 'Unlocked' on Sept. 1 Was Routine Ripple Escrow Release, Trackers Show
Whale Alert, a third-party blockchain tracking service, reported Tuesday that 500 million XRP worth about $689.6 million was “unlocked at Ripple” on Sept. 1.
That alert appears consistent with Ripple’s long-running monthly escrow schedule, not evidence that Ripple sold $689 million of XRP. In this context, “unlocked” means the tokens became available under the XRP Ledger’s escrow system. It does not by itself show the XRP was sold, transferred to exchanges or otherwise entered the market.
Available tracker data supports the view that this was a routine first-of-the-month escrow release. Separately, xrpldashboard showed Ripple escrow accounts aligned with a Sept. 1, 2026, monthly unlock schedule and listed a Ripple escrow account with roughly 500 million XRP as liquid, or unlocked. Still, the sourced research did not independently locate a public block-explorer page identifying the specific Sept. 1 EscrowFinish transaction hash for this event. That means the Whale Alert post and tracker data indicate a routine escrow release, but full on-chain confirmation of the exact Sept. 1 transaction was not yet available in the material reviewed.
Ripple’s escrow program has been in place for years. In May 2017, the company said it would lock up 55 billion XRP in time-based escrow contracts to make supply releases more predictable. As Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse wrote at the time: “We’ll use Escrow to establish 55 contracts of 1 billion XRP each that will expire on the first day of every month from months 0 to 54. As each contract expires, the XRP will become available for Ripple’s use.” He added: “We’ll then return whatever is unused at the end of each month to the back of the escrow queue.”
The size of Tuesday’s reported unlock matches that established mechanism. The research also found recent precedent for similar 500 million XRP unlock events on the first day of prior months, including Jan. 1, April 1 and June 1, 2026, based on Whale Alert archive pages. Those recurring releases are closely watched because they shape expectations around XRP supply, but past monthly unlocks have often been followed by re-escrow activity rather than immediate open-market sales. That is an important distinction: a gross monthly unlock shows XRP becoming available to Ripple under the escrow system, while the net amount that actually reaches circulation can be lower if unused tokens are placed back into escrow.
