Alex Ovechkin to Retire After 2026-27 Season, Ending 22-Year Capitals Career
Alex Ovechkin announced Monday that the 2026-27 season will be his last in the NHL, setting an endpoint for one of hockey’s defining careers after 22 seasons with the Washington Capitals.
The decision closes the playing career of the Capitals’ longtime star and, according to the team, the NHL’s all-time regular-season leading goal-scorer. Ovechkin has spent his entire NHL career in Washington and remains one of the most recognizable players of the past two decades.
The Capitals disclosed the decision in a press release on NHL.com, saying the announcement came exactly 21 years after Ovechkin’s NHL debut on Oct. 5, 2005. Ovechkin said he and his family reached the decision during the summer.
“My family and I decided this summer that this will be my final year in the NHL,” Ovechkin said in the team release.
Ovechkin, 41, was born Sept. 17, 1985, and is in his 22nd season with Washington, the only NHL franchise he has played for. The Capitals selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. In the team’s Oct. 5 release, Washington listed his career totals at 1,688 points, including 929 goals and 759 assists, in 1,575 games. He captained the Capitals to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history in 2018 and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP that year.
The timing of the announcement follows a year of uncertainty about his future. Washington re-signed Ovechkin on July 2, 2026, to a one-year contract for this season. Earlier this year, Ovechkin had said publicly he would wait until after the season to decide whether to retire, according to earlier AP reporting.
In the release, Ovechkin struck an upbeat tone about the season ahead rather than dwelling on the finish line.
“I am excited about this season with my teammates, and we will do everything we can to make this year special. I am going to enjoy every moment with my family, my boys, our fans and everyone who has been part of my hockey career. See you Wednesday, babes!” he said.
The Capitals also said they will mark Ovechkin’s final season with season-long community and philanthropic initiatives beginning in November, turning the 2026-27 campaign into a farewell for the player who defined the franchise for a generation.
