Met Gala 2025 Dazzles with 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' Theme, Celebrating Black Dandyism

Published:

On May 5, 2025, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosted its annual Met Gala, unveiling the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." This year's event honored the rich tradition of Black dandyism, exploring its evolution from the 18th century to contemporary fashion.

The accompanying Costume Institute exhibition, co-curated by Andrew Bolton and guest curator Monica L. Miller, delves into the significance of Black sartorial expression. Miller, whose 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity inspired the theme, remarked, "Dandyism can seem frivolous, but it often poses a challenge to or a transcendence of social and cultural hierarchies." The exhibition, which opened to the public on May 10 and runs through October 26, 2025, features garments, photographs, and artworks that trace the history and impact of Black dandyism.

The gala's dress code, "Tailored for You," encouraged attendees to interpret the theme through personalized menswear-inspired ensembles. Co-chairs for the event included actor Colman Domingo, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, musician A$AP Rocky, and musician and designer Pharrell Williams, alongside Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Basketball star LeBron James served as an honorary co-chair.

Notable attendees embraced the theme with distinctive fashion choices. Colman Domingo wore a pleated, gold-adorned cape over a gray and black suit, evoking the late André Leon Talley. Pharrell Williams donned a double-breasted, beaded evening jacket and dark trousers, complemented by dark shades. Lewis Hamilton appeared in an ivory tuxedo with a cropped jacket and matching beret.

The event also marked a significant fundraising achievement, raising over $31 million to support the Costume Institute, the highest in the gala's history.

This year's Met Gala and its corresponding exhibition underscore the profound impact of Black dandyism on fashion and cultural identity, offering a comprehensive exploration of its historical and contemporary significance.
