Nvidia and Cisco Launch Major Initiatives in Quantum Computing

Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, announced the establishment of the Nvidia Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC) in Boston during the company's annual developer conference in March 2025. Cisco Systems has also made strides in quantum technology. In May 2025, the company unveiled a prototype quantum networking chip designed to interconnect quantum computers. Developed in collaboration with the University of California, Santa Barbara, the chip operates at standard telecom wavelengths and functions at room temperature. It is capable of generating up to one million high-fidelity entangled photon pairs per output channel, supporting up to 200 million entanglement pairs per second per chip. Vijoy Pandey, Cisco's Senior Vice President of Outshift, highlighted the chip's significance, stating, "To build out that quantum network, the first building block that you need is an entanglement chip. Here's the first building block of that."

Alongside the chip announcement, Cisco opened a new quantum computing research lab in Santa Monica, California, dedicated to advancing quantum networking technologies. This initiative positions Cisco among other tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia, all of which are actively developing quantum technologies.
