Teamsters launch ULP strike at Breakthru Beverage’s St. Louis distribution center, halting some deliveries

·

Teamsters say workers at Breakthru Beverage’s St. Louis operation have launched an unfair-labor-practice strike tied to contract talks, raising the prospect of short-term disruptions in alcohol deliveries across the region.

The union announced the walkout Friday, saying drivers and warehouse workers at the beverage-alcohol distributor were on strike over what it described as unlawful bargaining conduct. Hoodline, citing the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, separately reported that picketing at the St. Louis distribution center had already halted some deliveries, a potential problem for local bars, restaurants and liquor stores if the action continues.

At the center of the dispute is contract language that the Teamsters say Breakthru is trying to impose in negotiations. According to the union, the company is making “illegal regressive proposals and surface bargaining” and wants workers to waive their right not to cross or work behind a Teamsters picket line at their workplace. The union is calling the walkout a ULP strike, shorthand for an unfair-labor-practice strike, though the assignment of that label reflects the union’s allegation rather than a public ruling tied to this stoppage.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said more than 100 drivers and warehouse workers represented by Teamsters Locals 600 and 688 are involved in the strike. That headcount differs from local reporting: Hoodline, citing the Post-Dispatch, said about 61 Teamsters walked off the job and were picketing the St. Louis distribution center on Wednesday, May 7.

The facility at issue is Breakthru’s St. Louis distribution center at 6701 Southwest Ave., according to National Labor Relations Board election records. The Teamsters say Local 600 drivers organized there in September 2025 and are now seeking a first contract. NLRB records corroborate that Local 600 won a drivers’ unit vote on Sept. 11, 2025.

Breakthru Beverage Group is a major U.S. alcohol distributor, and its St. Louis operation is a significant regional hub associated locally with the former Major Brands business. The dispute also appears to be part of a wider Teamsters campaign at the company. In its strike announcement, the union linked the St. Louis fight to broader conflict with Breakthru, including at the company’s facility in Cicero, Illinois.

“This company has been dragging their feet and refusing to put a fair agreement on the table,” Jeff Padellaro, director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, said in the union’s release.

No contemporaneous public statement from Breakthru Beverage addressing the St. Louis walkout was located in the sources reviewed.
