Jamal Musiala diagnosed with “brief, temporary” neurological absences, receiving specialist treatment
Jamal Musiala, the Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder, said Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with “brief, temporary but readily treatable absences” caused by “a neurological dysfunction” after two recent on-field episodes. In an Instagram post quoted by Bundesliga.com on Aug. 18, 2026, Musiala sought to reassure supporters, saying: “First things first – I’m doing well. I’m especially grateful for all your messages and your support.”
The update followed two incidents in Bayern matches over the past four days. Bundesliga.com reported that Musiala “appeared to collapse off the ball” during Bayern’s friendly against RB Leipzig on Saturday, Aug. 15. The same report said Musiala was named in coach Vincent Kompany’s squad for Bayern’s warm-up game against 1. FC Heidenheim on Tuesday, came on as a second-half substitute and was forced off again minutes later while accompanied by medical staff.
In his statement, Musiala said: “I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary but readily treatable absences, which are caused by a neurological dysfunction.” He added: “These can lead to the episodes that have occurred recently, such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim.”
Musiala also moved to calm concern about the seriousness of the issue. “What is important is that there is no further health risk beyond this,” he said in the Instagram post quoted by Bundesliga.com. He said he is receiving specialist treatment and, with the approval of neurological specialists, wants to continue normal daily life and keep playing football as part of his recovery. At the same time, he asked for privacy, saying: “I hope this helps you understand me a little better. At the same time, I ask for your understanding that I would like to continue keeping this matter within the circle of my closest confidants, the club and the experts.”
The disclosure carries immediate significance for Bayern because Musiala is one of the club’s highest-profile players and a regular for Germany. Bayern’s next competitive matches, according to Bundesliga.com, are the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund on Aug. 22 and the Bundesliga opener at home to VfB Stuttgart on Aug. 28. His availability is therefore an immediate issue for the team as the new campaign approaches.
The health update also comes after a difficult recent spell for Musiala. Bundesliga.com reported in July that he suffered a fractured fibula and a broken and dislocated ankle last summer, missed much of the following season and then underwent a minor, routine follow-up operation after the 2026 World Cup. As of Tuesday, the public details of his current condition came from Musiala’s own statement as quoted by Bundesliga.com; no separate detailed Bayern medical bulletin expanding on the diagnosis had been located.
