Giancarlo Stanton strains left calf in rehab; Yankees say he could miss remainder of 2026 season
New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton has strained his left calf while rehabbing his injured right calf, and manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that the setback could keep Stanton from returning before the end of the 2026 season.
According to an MLB.com Yankees report published Aug. 22, Boone said the new injury happened after Stanton “fell while running.” Boone described it as a “moderate” strain of the left calf, adding another hurdle for the 36-year-old designated hitter and outfielder as the regular season enters its final stretch.
Boone, speaking via MLB.com, said the Yankees are not closing the door on a return but acknowledged the calendar is working against Stanton. “We’re not ruling anything out. He’ll obviously continue to work to try to get it right and hopefully be available. But obviously we’re at a point in the calendar where it gets challenging, but you also never know.”
The latest injury comes during a season already disrupted by calf trouble. Stanton had been sidelined since suffering a right-calf strain on April 24. Boone said June 13 that Stanton then had a setback in his recovery from that injury. By late July, reports said Stanton had resumed parts of a running progression, though there still was no timetable for him to return to major league games. Now, with the new left-calf strain reported Aug. 22, his path back has become even more uncertain.
Stanton’s absence is significant for a Yankees lineup that has gotten only limited contributions from one of its top power bats this season. MLB’s player page listed him at .256 with three home runs, 14 RBIs and a .724 OPS in 90 at-bats at the time of the report. Boone underscored Stanton’s frustration and effort during the rehabilitation process, saying via MLB.com: “Obviously I’m bummed for him. He’s been working his tail off every day here trying to get this thing right. I think you all know how badly he wants to be on that field contributing to a championship, so obviously that’s disappointing. Hopefully we just continue to work to get him right and healthy.”
