Next-Gen Power: Hitachi and Mitsubishi Expand Pennsylvania Facilities to Meet Rising Energy Demand
In response to escalating energy demands across the United States, major corporations are making substantial investments in southwestern Pennsylvania to enhance the nation's power grid infrastructure. Hitachi Energy and Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) have announced significant expansions in the region, aiming to bolster production capacities and create new employment opportunities.
These strategic initiatives, totaling over $150 million, are set to generate more than 300 new jobs in the area. The investments are a direct response to the projected 2% annual increase in electricity consumption through 2026, driven by the proliferation of data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, and renewable energy integration.
Expansion Details
Hitachi Energy has announced a $60 million investment to expand its Mount Pleasant facility in Westmoreland County. This expansion aims to double the production capacity of high-voltage equipment, including dead tank breakers, gas-insulated switchgear, and hybrid switchgear. The project is expected to create approximately 100 new jobs and includes the implementation of a new gas-management system for EconiQ™ switchgear production, aligning with the company's commitment to eco-efficient technologies. Construction is slated to begin this year, with full production capacity anticipated by 2026.
MEPPI is investing $86 million to construct a new 160,000-square-foot advanced switchgear factory and testing lab in New Galilee, Beaver County. The facility will initially produce both vacuum and gas circuit breakers, transitioning to predominantly vacuum circuit breakers as operations scale. This project is anticipated to create at least 200 new jobs and retain 806 existing positions. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has supported this expansion with over $6.7 million in economic development and workforce grants. Construction began in March 2025, with the facility expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Economic and Strategic Impact
Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the state's commitment to economic growth, stating, "We are working to make Pennsylvania the best state in the nation for businesses to grow and thrive. We’re getting stuff done here in the Commonwealth and will continue making bold, strategic investments to boost our economy and create good jobs for Pennsylvanians."
Luca Calamari, general manager of Hitachi's high voltage business in North America, highlighted the current market dynamics: "Right now, there is a huge demand for breakers in the network, mostly utility growth, renewable connections, and data centers. This trend is creating a huge need for breakers."
These substantial investments by Hitachi Energy and MEPPI are poised to bolster the local economy in southwestern Pennsylvania by creating hundreds of new jobs and retaining existing positions. The expansion of manufacturing facilities will also enhance the region's role in the national energy infrastructure, positioning it as a critical hub for power grid technology. Furthermore, these developments align with the broader national trend towards renewable energy integration and electrification, contributing to the United States' decarbonization goals.
Addressing Rising Energy Demands
The recent surge in electricity consumption marks a significant shift after two decades of relatively stable demand. The projected 2% annual increase through 2026 underscores the rapid expansion of energy-intensive industries such as semiconductor manufacturing and data centers. The investments by Hitachi Energy and MEPPI represent a proactive response to this trend, aiming to strengthen the power grid infrastructure to accommodate future demands.
