Tragedy in Tremonton: Two Officers Killed in Line of Duty During Domestic Disturbance

On the evening of August 17, 2025, Tremonton, Utah, experienced a profound tragedy when two police officers were fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Sergeant Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, of the Tremonton-Garland Police Department lost their lives in the line of duty.

The incident began around 9:02 p.m. when multiple 911 hang-up calls were received from a residence near 700 North and 200 East. Upon arrival, the first officer engaged with an occupant of the home. During this interaction, a man emerged with a firearm and opened fire, killing both responding officers. A Box Elder County Sheriff's deputy, who arrived to assist, was also shot and wounded, along with his police service dog. Both were transported to medical facilities and were reported to be in fair condition. Remarkably, bystanders convinced the suspect to surrender peacefully. The 32-year-old suspect was taken into custody and faces charges including aggravated murder.

Sergeant Sorensen was a 17-year veteran of the department, recently promoted to sergeant, and was known for his dedication to public service. Officer Estrada had a background in corrections and patrol, remembered as a dedicated family man. The community has expressed profound grief, with residents lining the streets with flags to honor the fallen officers.
