Manchester City Signs Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG

Manchester City have announced the signing of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a five-year contract, with an option for an additional year. The transfer fee is reported to be £26 million. Donnarumma, 26, is expected to replace Ederson as City's first-choice goalkeeper, following Ederson's move to Fenerbahce for a reported £12 million.

Donnarumma began his professional career with AC Milan, making his Serie A debut at the age of 16. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the world. In 2021, he transferred to PSG, where he made 161 appearances and kept 56 clean sheets. Donnarumma played a pivotal role in PSG's first UEFA Champions League triumph, notably saving key penalties against Liverpool and maintaining a clean sheet in the final against Inter Milan.

Ederson, 32, joined Manchester City in 2017 from Benfica. Over eight seasons, he made 372 appearances, kept 168 clean sheets, and won 18 major honors, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League. Ederson has transferred to Turkish club Fenerbahce for a reported £12 million.

Donnarumma is expected to become Manchester City's new first-choice goalkeeper. His arrival follows the signing of James Trafford from Burnley, who has started City's league games this season but faced criticism for his performance in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Donnarumma expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City, stating:

"To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join."

Ederson reflected on his time at Manchester City, saying:

"I leave incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, and I am honoured to have worn the shirt so many times. Under Pep, we have dominated the Premier League and conquered Europe. It has been amazing."

Donnarumma's transfer to Manchester City highlights the club's ongoing strategy to invest in top-tier talent to maintain their competitive edge in domestic and European competitions. The move also underscores the fluid nature of player careers at the highest levels, with top clubs continually seeking to optimize their squads.

Donnarumma could make his debut in the Manchester derby against Manchester United on September 14, 2025. This high-profile match will provide an early opportunity for him to showcase his abilities to the City fans.
