Xander Schauffele and Max Greyserman Lead at Inaugural Baycurrent Classic

YOKOHAMA, Japan — The 2025 Baycurrent Classic, the first edition under its new title, is set to conclude at Yokohama Country Club, with Xander Schauffele and Max Greyserman sharing the 54-hole lead. Both players are poised to vie for victory in the final round of this co-sanctioned PGA Tour and Japan Golf Tour event.

The tournament, formerly known as the Zozo Championship, underwent rebranding in 2025 following a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Baycurrent Inc., a Tokyo-based consulting firm. This partnership marks a significant milestone in the event's history, reflecting the evolving landscape of professional golf sponsorships.

Yokohama Country Club, established in 1960, serves as the venue for the Baycurrent Classic. The course underwent significant renovations in 2016 by architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The tournament utilizes a composite course combining 16 holes from the West Course and two from the East Course, playing as a par-71 over 7,315 yards.

The tournament faced scheduling adjustments due to Typhoon Halong, which intensified to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. To mitigate potential disruptions, first-round tee times on Thursday were moved two hours earlier, from 8:45 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. local time, with a split-tee format implemented. This proactive measure aimed to ensure player safety and maintain the integrity of the competition.

As of October 11, 2025, Schauffele and Greyserman are tied at the top of the leaderboard. Schauffele, seeking his first win of the year, expressed confidence in his performance, stating, "Yesterday felt like you were just trying to survive the round and at some points it felt like there’s almost no wind today." Greyserman, who narrowly missed victory in Japan last year, is determined to secure his first PGA Tour win. Reflecting on his previous experience, he noted, "I would imagine some of these people went last year and I’m sure they remember me."

Other notable participants include Collin Morikawa, who is nine strokes behind the leaders, and defending champion Nico Echavarría, who is five strokes back. Japanese golfer Kazuki Higa delivered an impressive performance, shooting an 8-under 28 on his first nine holes on Friday, finishing the round with a 64.

The Baycurrent Classic serves as a significant platform for promoting golf in Japan and strengthening international sports relations. The inclusion of prominent players like Hideki Matsuyama, a national hero, boosts local interest and attendance. The event also contributes to the local economy through tourism and global media exposure.

As the final round approaches, anticipation builds for a thrilling conclusion to the inaugural Baycurrent Classic. Fans worldwide are eager to see whether Schauffele or Greyserman will emerge victorious, or if another contender will make a decisive move to claim the title.
