OpenAI Introduces 'ChatGPT Agent': A New Era in AI-Aided Task Management

OpenAI has unveiled "ChatGPT Agent," a significant enhancement to its ChatGPT platform, designed to autonomously perform complex digital tasks using a virtual computer environment. This development marks a substantial evolution in AI capabilities, integrating functionalities from OpenAI's previous tools—Operator and Deep Research—into a unified system.

ChatGPT Agent enables users to manage calendars, code, book travel, conduct web research, and generate presentations through natural language prompts. The agent operates through a virtual computer equipped with a visual browser, terminal, API access, and connectors to integrate with productivity applications like Gmail and GitHub. This integration allows the agent to browse websites, fill out forms, manipulate spreadsheets and presentations, analyze data, and more—all with user consent and oversight.

OpenAI has emphasized safety in the design of ChatGPT Agent. The system monitors for harmful usage and prompts additional scrutiny for biology-related content. Critical actions, such as sending emails or making financial transactions, require explicit user approval. To protect against injection attacks and ensure user privacy, the agent's memory feature is disabled.

ChatGPT Agent is available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers. Users can activate it via a new “agent mode” in the tools dropdown from the composer.
