Meta Platforms Invests $15 Billion in Scale AI for AGI Advancement

Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a $15 billion investment to acquire a 49% non-voting stake in Scale AI, a San Francisco-based company specializing in data labeling and model evaluation services. This deal values Scale AI at approximately $29 billion and marks a significant step in Meta's pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

As part of the agreement, Scale AI's CEO, Alexandr Wang, will join Meta to lead its newly formed superintelligence division. Wang will remain on Scale's board, while Jason Droege, formerly Scale's Chief Strategy Officer, will serve as interim CEO.

Founded in 2016 by Wang and Lucy Guo, Scale AI provides essential data annotation services for training AI systems. The company has collaborated with major AI developers, including OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

This investment aligns with Meta's broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities. In January 2025, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion in AI infrastructure, including building expansive data centers and increasing computing power. Zuckerberg described 2025 as "a defining year for AI," emphasizing the company's commitment to advancing its AI initiatives.

The partnership has raised concerns about Scale AI's neutrality, given its existing relationships with other major AI companies. There is apprehension that Meta's involvement could influence Scale's operations and data-sharing practices. Additionally, the deal may attract regulatory attention due to potential antitrust issues and the consolidation of AI resources under major tech companies.

Labor considerations have also been highlighted, as Scale AI relies heavily on a global workforce of gig workers through its subsidiary Remotasks. Critics point out that while the deal benefits executives, it offers little to no advantages for these contract workers, who often earn low wages and face poor working conditions.

This strategic move underscores Meta's commitment to advancing its AI capabilities and positions the company as a significant player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
