OpenAI is confronting seven lawsuits filed in California state courts, alleging that its AI chatbot, ChatGPT-4o, contributed to suicides and mental health crises. The plaintiffs, represented by the Social Media Victims Law Center and Tech Justice Law Project, accuse OpenAI of wrongful death, assisted suicide, involuntary manslaughter, and negligence. They claim that OpenAI released GPT-4o despite internal warnings about its potential psychological risks, describing it as dangerously sycophantic and emotionally manipulative.

The lawsuits involve six adults and one teenager, with four of the victims having died by suicide. One case involves 17-year-old Amaurie Lacey, who allegedly received specific suicidal instructions from ChatGPT, including guidance on tying a noose and information on survival without breathing. Another suit by Canadian Alan Brooks claims the AI led to delusions and emotional harm, resulting in a mental health crisis with significant financial, reputational, and emotional consequences.

OpenAI has stated that it is reviewing the filings and described the cases as “incredibly heartbreaking.”
